Curve Fall In Extra Inning
7/8/2010

A pinch-hit, two-RBI double by Marshall Hubbard in the top of the 10th inning was the difference maker on Wednesday night as the Binghamton Mets beat the Altoona Curve, 9-6, at Blair County Ballpark. Altoona came all the way back from a, 5-0, deficit to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth before allowing Binghamton to tie it in the ninth and force extras. Right hander Ramon Aguero (0-1) came on to pitch the 10th and issued a leadoff single to Michael Fisher before he was retired by Kris Watts at second when Jose Coronado tried to sacrifice him over. Aguero then walked Kirk Nieuwenhuis before Hubbard delivered the pinch-hit double. Josh Satin doubled two batters later to bring home Hubbard and run the lead to, 9-6. Trailing, 5-4, entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Altoona rallied for two runs to take the lead heading into the ninth. Watts singled and moved to second on an Anthony Norman sacrifice bunt before a Chase dArnaud walk by the new pitcher Emary Frederick. Gorkys Hernandez grounded out but moved the runners up to second and third with two away. Josh Harrison delivered the go-ahead hit to put the Curve in front, 6-5. In the ninth, Diego Moreno permitted back-to-back doubles by Josh Satin and Sean Ratliff to tie the game at six. He then worked himself out of the inning, stranding the go-ahead runner at second. The five-run comeback by Altoona took starter Rudy Owens off the hook after the southpaw permitted five runs on a season-high 13 hits in his shortest Double-A outing of 4.1 innings. Owens departed with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth but Dustin Molleken left the bases loaded by striking out Michael Fisher and B-Mets starter Chris Schwinden to end the inning. Altoonas bullpen kept them in the game through the middle innings with Molleken working 2.2 innings of scoreless relief while striking out six. The Curve pitching staff permitted 19 hits (nine doubles) in the game, which is a new season high. Hernandez finished the game 3-for-6 and extended his season-best hitting streak to 11 games while Harrison and Watts also had three hits apiece. Harrison also drove in three of Altoonas six runs in the game. Having dropped two straight, Altoona (53-32) will try and secure a series split with the B-Mets (46-40) in the final game of the series at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The Curve will send RHP Bryan Morris (4-3, 3.66), who was added to the MLB Futures Game roster on Wednesday, to the hill while Binghamton sends RHP Josh Stinson (5-1, 3.18) to the bump.
