The Penn State Smoke Free Tobacco Free Task Force has recommended that the university become tobacco free. The task force sent its finding to President Eric Barron and if approved Penn State would become the 11th tobacco free school in the Big Ten. The task force made seven recommendations including prohibiting tobacco on campus. The task force also recommends creating an Office for Tobacco Free Penn State having a soft launch of the policy for the Spring 2018 semester creating tobacco cessation programs among others. "The health consequences of tobacco related products can be profound and we take the well being of our Penn State community seriously." "We have the opportunity to make a fundamental shift in what it means to enhance health and this is an opportunity to impact the Penn State community today and in the future." Currently more than 1,500 college campuses implement tobacco free policies.
