Saturday the Centre County coroner identified the victim of a shooting in Pleasant Gap as 60 year old Richard Smalley. An autopsy completed Saturday determined that Smalley died Friday of gunshot wounds to his head and chest. Spring Township police said Smalley was from Spring Mills. Ardell Gross of Pleasant Gap is charged with first and third degree murder, as well as aggravated assault, in the shooting. Spring Township police said they arrived at a home on Whitman Avenue in Spring Township around 3:30 p.m. Friday after receiving a shots fired call. State police, the county coroner and county District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller were also at the scene. According to the criminal complaint Gross told police he shot Smalley a relative of his, after the two got into an argument over the recent death and estate of another family member. Police said Gross told them he got a gun from his bedroom and shot Smalley multiple times. Neighbors described Gross as a nice guy who kept to himself and never caused trouble in the area. Gross is in the Centre County Correctional Facility and, according to court documents, has been denied bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 8th at 11 a.m.
