In this week's Civic Service Report we look at a local organization helping what they call modern day orphans and the people who care for them. Vince Smith started Centre County Orphan Care Alliance in 2010 through work as a Minister in a collaborative effort between churches. He returned from a trip working with orphans in Zambia when he realized there is more of a need here than people think. There are about 75 kids in Youth Services in Centre County at any given time. He says if adopting or fostering children seems like a big thing to ask, there are also a lot of other ways to help. In addition to mentoring opportunities through Big Brothers, Big Sisters, the organization has a James 1:27 group that supports the people who do foster. Right now, there's a 60% drop out rate in foster families after their first placement. Organizers say the work can be difficult at times but it's very rewarding. Every child deserves a hero.
