Dangers of Burning

A new study from Penn State suggests a popular form of trash disposal especially in rural areas can pose long-term dangers. In many communities, garbage trucks are the main form of trash disposal, but in rural areas it's the well-known burn barrel. As it turns out, burning trash is not the safest, due to what's released in the air. Penn State researcher Dr. Richard Stehouwer headed a study of burn barrel sites throughout Centre County. Besides 3 main chemicals mentioned and the fact they can harm children playing nearby, there's other chemicals that could also be detrimental to plants and animals. The conclusion is if you want to avoid the accumulation, don't burn, but rather recycle everything you can and dispose of remaining refuse properly. The study points to the long term effects as well. The burn barrel materials can build up over the long-term and have an impact on future property values.
