According to a report by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council Cambria County had the highest rate of hospitalizations for pain medication overdoses in the state. The rate is based on 100,000 county residents, with Cambria County having a 62.4 rate, nearly double the state average. Blair County had the fourth highest with 53.7. Cambria County had the fourth highest rate of hospitalizations for heroin overdoses, with 41 per 100,000 residents. Philadelphia County has the highest at 54.7. The rate is based on a two year period of 2016 and 2017. Overall, heroin overdose hospitalizations in the state were up from 2016 while hospitalizations for pain medication overdoses were down.
