The contemporary dance company from New York came to state college today to perform at the hair and other stories community sing event. The group is called Urban Bush Women. The event focusing on investigating the conversation of hair, and how it relates to race, class, and gender. The group performed a mix of liberation songs and freedom songs that they say help to unpacked the pain and trauma suffered by people of color. "Whether as a black woman or as a white person or a person of any color, it's really less about leaning into the pain but understanding where that pain comes from, what has created those traumas within around that pain, and how as a people we are capable of uplifting that, of being better than that." Urban bush women are visiting Centre County this week, courtesy of the Penn State Performing Arts, along with the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.
