An Altoona woman was taken into custody on Independence Day after she tried to kill members of her family, police say. Police say 43-year-old Tracey McClellan suffers from a mental illness and told detectives she believed her family was going to be captured and tortured by someone, so she decided that she would kill her family members and then herself to save them. Police say sometime around 5 a.m. July 4 McClellan tried to kill one of her children, but the child escaped and hid with another child in the home. According to police, McClellan then went into her husband's room, where she stabbed him multiple timEs. Police say one of the children called 911 while her father was being attacked. When officers arrived at the home they found McClellan standing at the top of the stairs holding two knives. She refused to drop them. Police used a Taser on McClellan, causing her to drop the knives, and took her into custody. The husband was taken to UPMC Altoona for life-threatening injuries, but is now stable. One of the children was treated and released. The other child was not injured. McClellan is being held in the Blair County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail. She faces charges of attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children.
