In Cameron County, the lady Raiders basketball team played for a special cause, led by one of their own. In this week's civic service report we check out the senior project of one Cameron County High School student and why it meant so much for a beloved community member. "I wanted to help her out, because personally in my family I had breast cancer that impacted my life and I wanted to give back to someone." Mallory McKimm, a junior at Cameron County Senior High School, decided for her senior project she would do a charity basketball fundraiser, benefiting a local woman battling breast cancer. "She is inspirational.she teaches me how you can be strong through anything life gives you and to fight for life." The woman she is talking about is Connie Garrigan, a woman she says has been very active in the community for 25 years. "I love to help people and it is much easier to be on the giving end then on the receiving end, so I am a little overwhelmed.but, yeah." Mallory said preparations took a few weeks, but the community was on board from the jump. "We made t-shirts three weeks ago and we had to keep ordering more and more, because we kept selling them so fast.that is the best thing about our small town, that we are always there for each other." From raffles to a Chinese auction, t-shirt sales and more, they were able to raise $7800 for Connie. "This community is amazing. I have had so much support and so many offers of help. You know, rides to the hospital and financial support and everything. They make you want to keep going."
