Watched first episode of “Weather World” at age 5. Fell off monkey bars and broke left wrist a year later. Received first weather radio in 5th grade, had Mr. Walmer for science class, and met Victor Cruz from the National Weather Service in 6th grade. Rest became history. Became interested in mountain biking, music, and photography. Graduated high school with a flimsy wrist and honors in 1996. Went to Penn State University to major in Meteorology. Worked as a radio DJ for two years on campus. Sophomore year, got first car – a 1991 Subaru Legacy sedan – and instantly made lots of friends. Interned at WGAL-TV in Lancaster and met boyhood idols Joe Calhoun and Doug Allen. Decided to work in television. Waited tables at Chi-Chi’s. Wrist finally healed, but body grew to 6’5” and a larger waistline. Member of Campus Weather Service, inducted into Chi Epsilon Pi National Meteorological Honor Society, passed cloud physics, and finally learned how to spell “meteorology.” Sitting around eating Cocoa Puffs and watching “Dukes of Hazard,” got offer to do weekends at FOX 8 / ABC 23 in Johnstown as a weekend meteorologist while a senior at State; accepted. Checking account was happy. More friends soon followed. Loved job immensely. Worked as weekend meteorologist and camp counselor / lifeguard through the Summer 2000. Got a speeding ticket. Promoted to Chief Meteorologist in August 2000; parents were thrilled that orthodontic investment finally paid off. Wrecked Subaru, got another. Started doing radio weather for several local radio stations. Wrote PSU home game football forecasts for PSUplaybook.org. Started Where’s Koshko visits. Met lots of wonderful people in west-central Pennsylvania. Recently became an uncle. Realized lifelong dream of being a meteorologist had been fulfilled. Still love weather, job, mountain biking, music, photography, “Dukes of Hazard,” and family outings in the mountains. Thank you Mom, Dad, Jess, Mr. Walmer, Joe, Doug, and Victor. Life is
good. |
