Altoona Flooding Update

Heavy, localized downpours lead to flash flooding in Altoona and surrounding areas today

At one Altoona neighborhood this morning the street was filled with water and cars were unable to escape.

Blair county officials say the downpours began around 6:00 this morning, causing many basements to be pumped and roads left flooded in many parts of Altoona and Logan Township.

The Lakemont Dam also brought about concerns when the water level was raised five feet higher than normal.

Blair county officials say they’ll be monitoring the flooding throughout the day and are urging community members to stay safe.

“We had cars stuck in water this morning. People should have turned around instead of trying to drive through. It just causes more problems than there really needs to be.

“We’re in severe weather season. It is important for everybody to sign up for every potential weather alert that they could get.”

Other safety tips include getting to higher ground, and and do not walk or drive through flood water.
