Authorities say a man was found dead in a Clearfield County river after kayakers discovered his overturned canoe Tuesday.
According to state police, 52-year-old Matthew Birmingham’s body was found floating in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Bell Township Tuesday.
Crews from several counties began searching for Birmingham after the kayakers reported finding his overturned canoe, fishing license, fishing equipment and campsite gear.
Investigators say they learned that Birmingham had launched his canoe around 3 p.m. from a boat launch in Cherry Tree, Indiana County.
They say his body was recovered after 7 p.m.
The Clearfield County coroner was called to the scene to identify Birmingham.
An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.
State police say the investigation is ongoing.
