The First Heroes Award was given out Today by the Friends of Flight 93.
The awards were developed to help people remember the sacrifices their loved ones made and to find people who embody the spirit of the brave people onboard the flight.
The winner was announced at the National Memorial near Shanksville.
Of the 4 finalists chosen Detroit Firefighter Sergent Sivad Johnson was honored as the first recipient.
On August 21st last year while off duty Johnson jumped into a river when he heard 3 girls screaming for help.
Authorities believe he got caught in a rip current and died.
The girls were all saved.
Family members say his story is what the award embodies.
