Historic Train Rehab

A historic train caboose may be making another run in a planned trip across Centre County

and as Gary Sanderson reports, it could be a downtown focal point. Back in the day, train sets were a big deal for kids.

“You know, you see the little red caboose on the train that goes around under the Christmas tree, right?”

Luther Gette from the Friends of Historic Phillipsburg organization is among those making plans for a full sized caboose, this one that now sits in Centre Hall.

It dates back more than 100 years, probably in 1910 or even earlier, in service on the New York Central Rail Line that rolled through Pennsylvania.

Now, it may get a new life after the historic organization recently bought the caboose.

Details are still to be finalized. Their plan is to move the wooden railroad him relic to Phillipsburg, put it in a vacant lot along Front Street downtown and make it a museum of sorts
with old photos and other historic items inside a tourist and education attraction.

“We want to bring it and fix it up in Phillipsburg and make it like a focal point for people to come to the town. That’s why we want to put it. I’m pointing it’s right through the wall
here on the other side of the street, from the library”
