Man Charged in Fatal Accident

Authorities say they’ve charged a Windber man for the crash that killed his wife last year on a snow-covered, Cambria County road.

According to state police, 33-year-old Darrell Wholaver is facing a felony charge related to accidents involving death while not licensed.

The crash happened Jan. 27, 2020 on Plank Road in Carroll Township, authorities said, and it claimed the life of 31-year-old Amanda Harbaugh, Wholaver’s wife.

They say Wholaver was driving Harbaugh’s vehicle just after 9 a.m. while taking her to work in Ebensburg.

Another man was in the vehicle too, state police say.

According to officials, Wholaver hit the brakes when he saw another vehicle in front of him that was moving slower than he was.

Wholaver then lost control of the vehicle as it hit a dirt bank, went airborne then crashed into a billboard pole, troopers say.

Investigators say his wife died from the injuries she sustained in the crash.

State police say they interviewed Wholaver who told them that he was running late to get his wife to work, so he was going “a little fast.”
