Mask Wearing After Vaccination ?

Over half a million people in the state of Pennsylvania have received at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccine, according to the Wolf Administration. But once the vaccine is received, are people still required to follow mitigation efforts like social distancing and wearing masks?

Dr. David Csikos, the Chief Medical Officer at Chan Soon Shiong Medical Center at Windber explains why even after getting both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, people should continue with mitigation efforts.

“However, what is not known at this time is whether or not individuals who are vaccinated can transmit the virus or spread it to others. That’s the importance of continuing with preventative actions.” Said Dr. Csikos.

Chan Soon Shiong Medical Center began vaccinating people over a month ago. Dr. Csikos says they have since vaccinated about 2,500 people including healthcare workers at the hospital and others in the 1A phase.

“I think certainly we could use more [vaccines], but I think we have had an adequate supply to date to vaccinate those in the 1A group,” he said.

As for when they will move on to vaccinating those in phase 1B, it could be a few more weeks.

“I think we all know that the more people we vaccinate the quicker we can get out and achieve this herd immunity which we are striving to do.” Said Dr. Csikos. “And the estimates of that will be hopefully by summertime that we will be able to achieve that percentage of Americans that are vaccinated,” he added.
