Penn State Student Death Update

Investigators say a Penn State student, who was reported missing and later found dead, fell down an 11-story trash chute.

The State College Police Department and Centre County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the circumstances behind the death of 19-year-old Justine Gross.

Authorities say they’ve used eyewitness testimony, video and forensic evidence throughout their investigation.

Police say they’ve learned that Gross died after a fall inside an 11th floor solid waste disposal chute at 456 E. Beaver Ave. into a waste receptacle on the ground floor.

They say Gross fell around 11:30 p.m. Nov. 10.

Police say video evidence suggests Gross was alone in the 11th floor hallway and waste disposal room when she fell.

They say the waste receptacle she was in was emptied by a Borough of State College refuse truck before she was found.

Police later found her body at the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority transfer station in College Township at 2:45 a.m. on Nov. 12.

Investigators say the teen’s death still appears accidental, but the coroner’s office will determine her cause of death once final lab testing results and information are obtained.

Anyone with information is asked to call the State College Police Department at (814) 234-7150.
