Puppy Theft

State Police in Centre County say they’ve arrested a man who they believe has been stealing puppies from multiple states along the east coast.

Troopers say 23-year-old Michael Acker reached out to a local man Monday saying he was interested in buying two French Bulldog puppies.

Acker, claiming to be from Florida, said he’d pay $6,000 for the two puppies, troopers say.

According to state police, the local man was suspicious of the offer because he had recently heard reports of French Bulldog puppies being bought with fraudulent checks from Amish communities.

He also recognized Acker’s number as the same phone number that was used during the other thefts, troopers say.

The man contacted state police who traced the phone number to Virginia.

Troopers say they then watched as Acker arrived Tuesday to purchase the puppies with a fraudulent check.

Troopers say they searched Ackers vehicle and found more fraudulent checks.

Acker has been charged with felony theft by deception.

He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 10.
