Today the community gathered to provide support and seek justice in the November killing of corrections officer Rhonda Russell.
The rally was organized by her sons Justin, Eric and Richard.
The men say they want the public to be aware of all that happened the day their mother was shot and killed during the escape attempt of Christopher Aikens at Central Court.
They blame the county court administration for her death saying procedures need to change in order to keep something like this from happening again.
They also say they want the name of the officer who shot her released to the public.
They also want that officer charged in her killing.
“We hope the community keeps backing us and joins us in the fight to not only the man who shot and killed our mother. We hope we get the support of the community to keep pressing that until a decision is made to charge this man who chose to take our mother’s life from her.”
“My brothers and I, we didn’t let our mom down when she was alive and we’re not gonna let her down now.”
The trio says they’re thankful for all of the community support and say they plan to have more rallies in the future.
Meanwhile District Attorney Pete Weeks says he wasn’t initially aware of Today’s protest but that the investigation into Russell’s death is ongoing.
“We are still in the middle of that investigation. I can’t comment on that investigation at all because it is still active and we have not received all the results of that investigation.”
Weeks went on to say his office is committed to doing all it can to make the prison and criminal justice system safer for corrections officers.
