In Somerset County residents will soon have the ability to text for assistance.
They can text 911 for emergency help when they are unable to make a voice call.
The service will be available to any wireless customer within range of a Somerset County cell tower.
Officials say texting 911 will assist those with hearing and speech impediments. Or for those in a situation where it’s unsafe to speak.
Emergency officials say the first message should always provide location information and the nature of the emergency.
Customers are encouraged to only use texting when calling 911 is not an option as making a phone call is still the most efficient way to reach emergency help.
