Wilmore Dam Update

First responders and residents of Cambria County were on high alert Today as the Wilmore Dam reached maximum capacity.

Nicole Fuschino has been following this story for us Today and has the details.

It was a hectic day in Cambria County and this evening an announcement was made that residents of Wilmore and surrounding areas that were evacuated earlier Today will be able to go back home.

The Wilmore Dam crested its banks which means water levels reached a critical stage in that area.

Officials warned the public about the possibility of the dam failing and evacuations began in Wilmore Borough this afternoon.

Officials said the heavy rains caused the North Branch of Little Conemaugh River to rise which fed into the Wilmore Dam.

But James Greco Chairman of the Cambria Somerset Authority that owns the Wilmore Dam said they followed the emergency action plan by notifying 911 that the dam was approaching a critical level.

He said the water at its highest point was a foot and a half below the dam and that the spillway was working as it should be by releasing a million gallons per minute.

Officials said this was a great joint effort by multiple fire, police, and EMS crews throughout the region
