UPMC Altoona Nursing

This morning at the Blair County Courthouse nurses from UPMC Altoona gathered calling for lawmakers to act on a bill they say would improve hospital conditions and safety.

Called the Patient Safety Act nurses are calling for it to be moved to committee vote.

They say the bill would set safe patient to staff ratios and improve the standards for overall care.

We spoke with some of those nurses who tell us they fear a lack of staffing at the hospital could lead to unsafe conditions for patients and healthcare workers.

“There’s a lot of moral injury that comes with high ratios, high nurse to patient ratios. I know a lot of people who’ve dealt with it, I know a lot of people who are dealing with it. I know a lot of people who have left the bedside because of it.”

They also tell us a lot of the nurses are leaving the hospital to work as travel nurses for more money.
