Johnstown Apartment Standoff

Johnstown Police say a wanted man is in custody after barricading himself inside a West End apartment complex.

The scene played out on Laurel Avenue as Johnstown Police and members of the Cambria County Special Emergency Response Team worked to end the situation peacefully.

After 2 hours of police commanding the man to exit the apartment building, Johnstown Police finally took Earl Johnson into custody.

Here’s what the scene looked and sounded like earlier.

Johnson who police say was a violent felon was taken into custody around 1:30.

Police tell us he’s from Columbus, Ohio and was wanted on multiple felony warrants out of Ohio and Cambria County.

Police say they made contact with Johnson after receiving a domestic violence call. That’s when they say he barricaded himself inside the apartment.

Johnstown Police Captain Chad Miller says bystanders fled the building, but Johnson stayed inside with guns and refused commands to come out.

Cambria County SERT was called in to help.

“It really helps us out a lot for sure. Luckily, they were in the area training so it was a quick response from them. We didn’t have to call anybody out, the team was already assembled. Its just an excellent resource for us when we
have a situation like this with a possible violent felon. Were able to utilize them and their tools and their experience training and expertise.”

Those who live in the apartment building were able to return shortly after Johnson was taken out.
