Pennsylvania State Police have released new details about an officer-involved shooting Sunday evening that left a man dead and an Indiana Borough police officer seriously injured.

According to state police, officers with the Indiana Borough Police Department were dispatched around 7:02 p.m. Sunday to a reported domestic disturbance at a home in the 100 block of North Cherry Avenue.

Investigators said that while officers were at the scene, the male allegedly brandished a shovel and threatened one of the responding officers. They said the suspect then fled on foot, prompting a pursuit.

State police said the officer caught up with the suspect and attempted to take him into custody. During the ensuing struggle, investigators said the suspect stabbed the officer multiple times in the head and face with a knife.

The officer then fired their duty weapon, fatally striking Andrew Wade Herman, 35, according to state police.

The injured officer was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center for treatment. State police did not release an update on the officer’s condition.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. State police said the individual’s identity has not yet been released because next-of-kin notifications are still pending.

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop A Major Case Team is leading the investigation into the shooting.
