Money Saving Meals: Frizzled Hamburger

Dinner time doesn’t have to break the bank! You can find affordable recipes that can feed your whole family, and we’re here to help! Today, KC O’Day and her niece Mallory make an inexpensive, family favorite.

Frizzled Hamburger

Recipe by my Gran, as remembered by my sister Laura and me (KC)

1 small onion, chopped

1 cloves garlic, chopped finely

1 pound hamburger

2 cups whole milk

2 tablespoons corn starch

1 teaspoon Gravy Master (or boullion)

Water

Salt and Pepper

Gran always made this in a cast iron skillet, and we think that’s best! But any large skillet will do.

Put the skillet on the stove and warm it up using a medium heat.

Salt and Pepper the skillet

Add the ground beef, onions and garlic, cooking until the beef is browned.

Meanwhile, make a slurry with the cornstarch – add it to a glass jar with about a quarter cup of water, and shake until it’s all incorporated.

When the beef is browned, if there’s a lot of excess oil, drain some, but not all of it!

Add the milk slowly, followed by the Gravy Master. Bring to a slow boil. The milk will start to reduce.

Add the slurry, stirring often until it forms a thick gravy.

Serve hot over mashed potatoes, egg noodles or rice. But potatoes are best!!
