Retro Recipes: Potato Donuts

Encore Presentation

It’s time for another installment of Retro Recipes where KC and her niece Mallory try out a recipe from a bygone era. This month, they’re making Depression-era Potato Donuts.

Depression Era Potato Donuts

From the B. Dylan Hollis youtube video

Peel dice and boil 2 russet potatoes until they’re soft. Mash them

When the potatoes are cool, add one cup buttermilk, a package of yeast, 4 teaspoons baking powder, and a half a teaspoon of baking soda, ½ cup melted butter, 4 eggs, a teaspoon of cinnamon, and 2 cups sugar. Combine.

Add enough flour to make a firm dough, about 6 and ½ cups

Let rise for one hour

Heat enough vegetable oil in a pot for frying

Roll out the dough, cut into donut shapes

Fry until light fluffy and brown!

Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
