Windber Fire Prevention Day

Fire prevention was the main lesson for students at Windber Area Elementary School on Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of students took part in their 3rd annual Health and Safety Walk and Fire Prevention Day.

Students started by taking a walk outside and getting a healthy snack bag.

They ended up in the gym where they sat in on a fire prevention assembly hosted by members of the Windber Fire Department and Northern EMS.

Windber Area Elementary School Principal Charles Beckley says the goal is for students to spread what they learned to their families.

“They will go home and tell their parents. That’s the greatest thing. I remember as a young boy, as soon as I had the fire prevention day, I went home and drew this whole big evacuation plan for my family, for my house. So, it’s great for the kids to take that home with them to provide safety for their family too,”

One major topic of the assembly was planning an exit from a fire situation within the home.
