Authorities in Clearfield County are investigating the death of an inmate at SCI Houtzdale.
According to a press release from the prison, 44-year-old Michael Shaffer was found unresponsive in his cell on the afternoon of Oct. 23.
Investigators say life-saving measures were performed on Shaffer but were unsuccessful.
State police Clearfield and the Clearfield County coroner’s office is investigating Shaffer’s cause of death.
Authorities say Shaffer was serving a 2 to 5 year sentence for a DUI conviction out of Jefferson County and had first arrived at SCI Houtzdale on Oct. 11.
Officials say his next-of-kin has been notified.
