Special Olympics In State College

Tonight Pennsylvania’s Special Olympics begin their Summer Games at Penn State

Some games started earlier today with preliminary competition

But the Opening Ceremony is later Tonight at 7:15

According to Special Olympics Pennsylvania more than 1,600 athletes travel from across the State to compete in the three day event

Special Olympics Pennsylvania has held games since 1970 and exists to provide opportunities for sports training and competition to those with intellectual disabilities

CEO Nate Garland says this event is a great showcase for the competing athletes but there are even more athletes the Special Olympics welcomes to be involved

“The most important thing to remember while we’re really proud of the 1650 athletes this weekend and the 15 thousand around the state, training and competing for every one athlete participating, there’s still 27 athletes on the sidelines that would benefit and certainly if you’re in that State College,
Johnstown or Altoona area go to our website www.specialolympicspa.org and look for programs in our community.”

Those who win gold this weekend will have opportunity to represent team Pennsylvania at the Minneapolis 2026 National Games
