Centre County Prison Board Looks At Expanding Recreational Area

The Centre County Prison Board of inspectors continues to look into an expanded recreational area at the prison

More than the gym areas inside th prison and simply not an area of concrete and sky as one of the backers of the plan said at recent prison board meeting.

Centre County inmates, unless they’re on work release generally have very little access to outdoor recreation. After years of discussion, public commentary will now be included as the county considers a feasibility study on a new rec area at the jail.

“We’re going out requesting qualifications from qualified design professionals at the jail that are specialized in that line of work. to perform a feasibility of what could be possible at the correction facility.”

Two overriding concerns remain security at the prison, and the costs involved. Along with the expense of construction, an outdoor rec area will more than likely mean the hiring of more corrections officers

County officials stress, the project could take years to develop.
